Beautiful, Alex! Definitely makes me reflect on the rollercoaster of emotions I felt about Angel Reese in that championship game, witnessing confidence definitely makes people feel big feelings! It also makes me think about the interesting contrast of super big bravado + the "all glory to god" kind of humbleness we see so much in sports especially. Thanks for sharing your perspective, as always
Yes! Angel Reese is a perfect example of unapologetic confidence. Her celebrations got so misconstrued & misrepresented. I also think about Fox News' Laura Ingraham advising LeBron to "shut up & dribble." We're often ok to entertain as long as we're quiet while doing it.
This was great! I’m late to it, but it was an on-time read. There’s something about authenticity that builds community and a sense of belonging. I think that’s apart of the backlash too - the bringing along.
Thanks for reading, Martina! I’m glad you’re here. I agree with you, especially on the bringing along. Leagues were okay with singular athletes like A.I., T.O., and Primetime. But these athletes were influencing other athletes at such a rapid rate. I’m sure they didn’t want it to get beyond what they could control lol
Thanks for sharing this piece and perspective. Illuminating to me from many angles: I’m not part of Black culture (see profile photo!), I don’t really follow pro/college sports, etc. Loved it.
Having a voice--however it is expressed--is a universal need.
Would love it if this this were “An Ode to Outspoken Black Men: Part 1 of Many.”
Matt, thank you so much for reading and taking the time to post such a thoughtful comment. 100% agree with you it’s vital to have a voice. A.I., T.O. & Prime helped me find mine. Definitely considering what a series or sequel might look like. Thank you again!

Def not!!
This is beautiful. Also, that NFL 2K5 cover really brought me back haha.
Thank you, glad you got a chance to read it! That game was ahead of its time
This damn near brought me to tears. Deserves a very large platform and feature
All the love, fam. Grateful for you 🫶🏽
